Northwestern Croatia
Rolling hills, truffle forests, and a touch of Venetian soul.
About Istra
Istria is the only part of Croatia that feels Mediterranean in a specifically Italian way. Centuries under Venice left behind not just the bell towers and loggias, but a sensibility — an appreciation for the table, for craftsmanship, for the unhurried afternoon — that distinguishes the peninsula from the rest of the country.
The interior is a landscape of hilltop villages and white truffle forests. Motovun, Grožnjan, Rovinj — each town occupies a ridge with the confidence of a place that has always known its own worth. Below them, the Mirna and Dragonja rivers wind through valleys where Malvazija and Teran grapes produce wines of increasing international recognition.
The coast moves between the Roman amphitheatre at Pula — still used for concerts, still entirely itself — and the painted facades of Rovinj, which photographs beautifully but is also, genuinely, beautiful.
