Northwestern Croatia
A capital with the soul of a town and the ambitions of a city.
About Zagreb
Zagreb is frequently underestimated, which is why visitors who spend more than a day here tend to extend their stay. The city operates on a human scale: the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) can be walked in an hour, but repays much longer. The Lower Town's grid of Secession and neo-baroque buildings was laid out in the 19th century with a civic ambition that still feels generous.
The market culture is exceptional. Dolac, the main market above the main square, has been running every morning since 1930. The vendors — many of them farming families from the surrounding countryside — sell produce, cheese, and cut flowers with a directness that resists any performance.
Zagreb's position as a gateway to Croatia's interior means it also functions as the best base for day trips: Plitvice Lakes two hours south, the Zagorje castles thirty minutes north, the Lonjsko Polje wetlands an hour east. For guests who want to understand the whole country, not just its coast, Zagreb is the only logical starting point.
